Mold Removal – Removing Mold Spores

When it comes to mold and mold damage, there are five facts to understanding mold that everyone should know. These facts include:

1) Mold needs moisture to grow;
2) Mold can be harmful or helpful – depending on where it grows;
3) Mold does not grow on dry materials;
4) Mold growing inside a home can affect the residents; and
5) Homeowners and property residents can learn to recognize mold.

Indoor air quality has a greater impact on health than outdoor air quality, as North American adults spend almost 90% of their time indoors. The ODOROX hydroxyl generator is an advanced green technology that offers enormous benefits for improving air quality and decontaminating areas. The benefits that accompany the Generator can be applied to any industry and even for residential use.ODOROX hydroxyl generators provide a permanent solution to combat poor indoor air quality due to bacteria, viruses, mold, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and offensive odors. Unlike using ozone, foggers and harsh chemicals, the Odorox system is completely safe for people, animals, plants, rubber, plastic, vinyl, electronics and other sensitive materials. This allows the generators to be operated in occupied areas twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Everyone can benefit from the use of an onsite ODOROX Odor Processor.

Mold Removal | Fun Mold Facts

Mold: The “Un” Invited Guest to the Party

Oh boy! What to do! An unexpected flood…Water Damage that sets in…And then, who comes knocking on the door? Mold!

Before one can fight mold, though, one must learn about what mold is.

Molds are microscopic fungi, a group of organisms which also includes mushrooms and yeasts. Fungi are highly adapted to grow and reproduce rapidly, producing spores and mycelia in the process.

Mold is encountered every day. Foods spoil because of mold. Leaves decay and pieces of wood lying on the ground rot due to mold. That fuzzy black growth on wet window sills is mold. Paper or fabrics stored in a damp place get a musty smell that is due to the action of molds.

While molds are often considered to be harmful, certain molds can be useful to people. The drug penicillin is obtained from a specific type of mold. Some foods and beverages are made by the actions of molds. The key to beneficial kinds of molds is that they are selected and grown in a controlled fashion.

Molds are undesirable when they grow where we don’t want them, such as in homes. Molds that grow inside may be different from the ones found outdoors. According to USA Today, there are at least 100,000 types of mold, but only a few dozen are toxic and can cause health problems. These toxic molds produce chemicals called mycotoxins that can cause rashes, seizures, unusual bleeding, headaches, respiratory problems and severe fatigue in some people. According to the Mayo Clinic, sinus problems are almost always the result of toxic mold.

To help you survive the party with grace, we offer you a list we lovingly call, “Fun Facts about Mold!” Don’t worry…even with mold as your guest, we’re certain you’re party will be a scream!

Mold Removal: Is All Mold Toxic?

Black mold often connotes the "Black Plague." If you find something you think is black mold, don't panic, as not all discoloration is mold and not all black molds are toxic. In fact, humans and pets often cause some of the spots that look like black mold. If people lean their heads against a wall repeatedly, or pets rest in the same spot against a wall, the oils from hair and fur can cling to the wall. The oil will collect dust from the air, and the patterns created often look like mold. If you see something that appears to be mold, relax and investigate the area, because you may be panicking for no reason. At the same time, learning to look for mold will also alert you to finding toxic mold. Toxic mold must be removed as it can cause several health problems in people and pets.

Mold and odor problems with your towels?

If you live in Florida, then you know what I’m talking about. You reach for a towel and ICK, it has been possessed by a musty odor. Your towel may have just fallen victim to mold growth. Think about it. After you use your towel, you hang it to dry in your bathroom. As you know, bathrooms are notorious for having poorair circulation and retaining humidity – the perfect breeding ground for mold.

So how does one win the battle against moldy towels? Read on:

1. First off, keep your washer clean. Clean it regularly per manufacturer’s instructions. For example, my front loader requires a bleach clean cycle once a month.

2. In your bathroom, try to maximize the drying area of your towel.

3. Replace your towel often. Some experts even argue that towels should be replaced daily, especially if you have any skin irritations like acne. But, we know most people don’t have the time to constantly wash towels.

4. Once you are ready to wash your towel, WASH your towel. Wet or damp towels that are left lying around are the perfect host for mold growth.

5. When washing your towels, understand that laundry detergent will just not cut it. You need to get serious. Either a) Use a Color-safe bleach (if you missed our article on how bleach doesn’t kill mold, please refer to it. In the meantime, this product works in a pinch) or b) add 1 1/2 cups of white vinegar to the laundry cycle in addition to the detergent or c) use Borax per the box’s directions.

6. Our preferred cleaner here is a natural enzyme based laundry detergent like “Naturally It’s Clean”. Enzymes are amazing. They dissolve mold and eat up odor. Unfortunately, natural cleaners tend to be on the pricey side.

7. Make certain to leave your washer door open.

8. Completely dry your towels in the dryer. Make sure that towels do not feel damp to the touch or throw them back in for a touch up. If you take a damp towel out of the dryer, you are undoing everything you just did.

We hope this helps you in your quest to having and maintaining fresh smelling towels!

Black Mold | Dear 1-800-DRY-ME-OUT: Is My Workplace Making Me Sick?

Thanks to Mike for sending in a question about the health of his workplace and whether or not it might be infected by black mold.

Dear 1-800-DRY-ME-OUT:

I work at a dealership and over the last two months or so, I have been noticing that I feel unwell near the end of the day. I feel headachey, worn down and almost as if I have allergies. Recently, I was talking with one of my co-workers about how I have been feeling and they mentioned that they have been feeling the same way. We also agreed that on weekends away from the office, we both feel fine.

I am wondering if it could be an underlying mold issue? I have heard about black mold inducing similar effects but we cannot see any mold anywhere. I know that you deal a lot with mold and performed a mold remediation for a friend of mine when they purchased an older fixer-upper home. What are your thoughts?

Thanks for your help,

Mike

Here us our response:

Hi there Mike,

Thank you for your question on whether or not we may feel the health of your workplace is being jeopardized by mold.

You had mentioned in your question that you cannot see mold so you weren’t sure if mold could actually be the cause. You have excellent insight because mold does not need to be visible to the eye to be present and wreaking havoc on your system. Often, mold can grow in hidden places like behind a water source, in the attic, in the drywall etc. Mold will also grow undetected under carpet, behind baseboards, under wood flooring, in ducts and so on.

For example, if the property has ever experienced any kind of water damage from a storm or heavy rain, mold could have easily grown if the area damaged by water was not thoroughly dried out and properly restored. Mold will begin to grow within 24-48 hours of water damage occurring. So yes, there could definitely be a mold problem within the building you work in.

As for whether or not mold could be causing these symptoms you and your co-worker are experiencing, it most certainly could be. Prolonged exposure to mold can stimulate allergic like reactions in people as well as cause symptoms of being sick. The mold most famous for producing negative sick-like symptoms is Stachybotrys also known as Black Mold. However, other forms of mold such as Aspergillus, also a common mold, can also create symptoms of allergies and illness.

Common symptoms of mold exposure and sensitivity include: sinusitis, headaches, general allergy symptoms such as stuffy or runny nose, fatigue, memory loss and breathing disorders. For a more complete list of mold-associated symptoms, visit Symptoms of Mold Exposure and Sickness. Sinusitis is the most common health care complaint and affects 37 million people in USA (about 1 out of every 7 Americans). According to a Mayo Clinic study, mold is a known allergen that many people are likely sensitive to. In addition, the study shows that mold in the air and in the nose is directly linked to sinus inflammation. The Mayo Clinic study proved that 93% of all chronic sinusitis studied was caused by mold!

Mold is extremely dangerous to a person or even a pet’s health. Currently, there is a theory that supports that Fibromyalgia, sudden onset of Asthma or Emphysema, Chronic Lung and Sinus infections as well as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are actually caused by mold exposure.

It appears that people with better immunity will be able to tolerate the ill effects of mold; however, people who are under stress, have weakened immunities, are allergic to mold or are seniors are at greater risk to develop mold-induced illnesses. Constantly working in a mold-infected environment can take its toll on even a healthy person.

What we suggest is that you talk to a health care provider and also speak with your employer about your concerns. A health care provider can treat you if needed and employers, by most laws, are required to take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of workers.

Regarding your employer, we suggest they hire a mold remediation company like 1-800-DRY-ME-OUT to perform a mold inspection. We have the latest technology to find mold anywhere within a building. Upon receiving the results of a mold test, we could determine whether or not mold exists within your building. If mold is found, a plan would be devised for mold removal and complete remediation of the property.

Thank you for sending us your question and let us know if we can help with this situation any further.

Mold Removal By A Cleaning Company?

Recently, we were called in for a mold remediation job. The homeowners were concerned about a build up of mold in their master bathroom shower stall as well as a strong odor that they couldn’t place.

Apparently, they had tried several methods to clean the shower stall and after every attempt failed, they hired a professional cleaning service.

“I finally hired a cleaning company to get rid of the mold and they couldn’t do it,” one homeowner told our mold inspection expert.

The homeowners were unable to get rid of the mold because they were simply applying topical cleaning agents, such as bleach, to the moldy materials. Likewise, the cleaning company came in and used whatever cleaning solutions it had trying to make the mold disappear. Mold, however, does not just disappear and moldy materials cannot simply be cleaned; they must be removed.

A common myth that many homeowners hold is that bleach kills mold. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Mold is rooted into a mold spore. While beach has more power on non-porous surfaces, it cannot reach into porous surfaces, such as grout or caulk where bathroom mold usually grows, and thus, affects only the top layer of mold by bleaching the color. In essence, bleach only removes stains, not the mold, because it does not have any effect on destroying the roots of mold spores. Furthermore, there is some argument that bleach worsens the problem because it tends to make surfaces more porous due to its abrasive nature. Currently, publicly available chemical mold cleaners are bleach-based.

Mold Proofing Your Home: Keep Your Drains Clean and Mold Free

Mold Proofing Your Home: Keep Your Drains Clean and Mold Free

While not often thought of as a place that might grow mold, drains in the bathroom or kitchen can indeed grow mold. Soap scum and grime provide a food source for mold and the running water from the tap provides a source of moisture. It is good practice to keep drains clean so as to avoid this possibility all together.

As part of our Mold-Proofing Your Home, Room by Room series, we are pleased to offer you mold-proofing advice on drains!

To clean a drain:

Pour a handful of baking soda into it.
Add a cup of vinegar.
Put the plug in the drain.
Let the vinegar and baking soda work for about 20 minutes.
Run fresh water into the drain.

Drains which do not drain water properly can also contribute to mold growing in bathtubs, showers or basins. Any water that doesn’t drain properly and sits in the drain creates a moisture problem. Any environment like this where water is collected and stands for long periods can easily grow mold. If there is a build up of water in the drain, ie. the water is not drained as fast as you can run the water from the tap, then there is a problem with your drain being clogged.

If you come across a clogged drain, try the above steps and add the use of a small plumbing snake if needed.

Other Tips:

Keep the relative humidity in the bathroom below 55% to prevent mold growth
Wipe down wet surfaces so they dry faster
Regularly clean the bathroom
Clean your drains at least once a month

Mold-Proofing Your Home: Basement

As part of our Mold-Proofing Your Home, Room by Room series, we are pleased to offer you mold-proofing advice on Basements and Crawlspaces!

Mold Proof your Basement or Crawl Space:

1. Reduce the amount of clothes, paper and furnishings stored in the basement. Discard badly damaged materials. Eliminate clutter to improve air circulation. Only washable items should be stored.

2. Dehumidify the basement during the warm months.

3. Avoid carpets on slab-on-grade or below grade floors.

4. Periodically clean the drain in your basement floor. Use half a cup of bleach, let it stand for a few minutes, then flush with plenty of water. Keep the drain trap filled with water.

5. Avoid standing water. Keep sump pits covered (you can use plywood wrapped with plastic).

6. Regularly clean and replace furnace filters. Use a pleated one-inch filter, not a coarse filter.

7. If you have a heat recovery ventilator (HRV), clean the filter inside the HRV often.

8. If you notice molds or signs of dampness, such as water on your windows or wet spots elsewhere, do not humidify. Disconnect furnace humidifiers that are no longer used.

9. If you have electric baseboards, vacuum the units, or have a professional clean them for you.

Fighting Black Mold Damage Clearwater

When it comes to mold and mold damage, there are five facts to understanding mold that everyone should know. These facts include: 1) Mold needs moisture to grow; 2) Mold can be harmful or helpful — depending on where it grows; 3) Mold does not grow on dry materials; 4) Mold growing inside a home can affect the residents; and 5) Homeowners and property residents can learn to recognize mold.

Before one can fight mold, we must learn about what mold is.

Molds are undesirable when they grow where we don't want them, such as in homes.

Mold Damage Tampa: Top Ten Facts About Mold

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, New York City Health Department, here are ten top things to know about mold!

1. There are more than 100,000 species of mold. Most types that are routinely found are not hazardous to healthy individuals. But too much exposure or certain types of mold could cause allergic reactions, asthma, rashes, respiratory complaints or other types of mold related illness.

2. There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores indoors. The way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.

3. If mold is a problem at home or in school, clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.

4. Fix the water leak to prevent mold growth.

5. Reduce indoor humidity (to 30%-60% ) to decrease mold growth.

6. Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.

7. Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Absorbent materials like ceiling tiles, plasterboard or wood, may need to be replaced.

8. Prevent condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, pipes, exterior walls, roof or floors) by adding insulation.

9. In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting.

10. Molds can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet and foods.

Simple Trick to Reduce Mold Spore Damage Tarpon Springs

A simple trick to help reduce mold spores within the home and thus, help thwart mold growth is to vacuum surfaces with a vacuum cleaner which has a High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter.

Proper vacuuming reduces the amount of mold spores. All surfaces in the home (floors, walls, ceilings, shelves) and non-washable furnishings (such as sofas, chairs, etc.) must be vacuumed thoroughly and frequently.

HEPA filter vacuums are made by companies such as Dyson and are found in all major retailers now. Some other great benefits to using a HEPA filter vacuum is that the filter doesn’t clog with dust and can be washed. As well, you don’t need to purchase vacuum bags; rather, you dump the vacuum tank when full. This is both a benefit on the budget and for the environment (less waste). Plus, no loss of suction!

Extreme Makeover Mold Damaged Health Clinic Edition

Extreme makeover, health clinic edition: MyFoxTAMPABAY.com

NEW PORT RICHEY – Cable television is filled with flashy home renovation shows. Many are the product of Hollywood directors who carefully supervise the driving of every nail.

Unlike the emotion-filled, multi-camera, star-driven home renovation extravaganzas, Jon Hall works quietly. He runs Advanced Restoration in Port Richey, specializing in repairing homes with water, mold or other damage.

Hall is preparing for a long weekend of hard work. He and some of his employees will do a major renovation project at the Good Samaritan Clinic.

“We want to give back to a community that has given so much to us,” Hall said.

The Good Samaritan Clinic is where the poor and uninsured go for free health care. More than 4,000 patients are treated there for free every year, and the demand for service is growing.

“When they pull into our parking lot, this is their last means. They’ve let their diagnosis go so long and when they walk in our door they are very sick,” explained Melissa Fahy, the CEO at Good Samaritan.

As the clinic serves the needs of the sick for free, the building itself has become a little sick.

“The outside of the building, the mold, the structure being cracked, the wear and tear takes its toll,” Fahy said.

Hall decided to ask the New Port Richey business and civil leaders to recommend something that could benefit from a restoration project that would be donated by Advanced Restoration.

Good Samaritan was selected.

“We’re going to fill all the cracks, we’re going to apply sealer, we’re going to paint the whole thing, repaint the curbs, scrape all those and take care of any other issues that need to be taken care of while we’re here,” Hall said.

The clinic gets no state or federal funding. Building restoration is not in the clinic’s budget.

“You just never know where the next dollar is going to come from, or what we’re going to do next,” according to Fahy.

There may have been no surprise announcement about the project, but there was a lot of emotion.

“We were just doing a dance in the hallway, and everyone was just ecstatic,” Fahy recalled.

The recession that brought so many people to the Good Samaritan Clinic has been tough on the construction industry as well. So why donate thousands of dollars worth of supplies, equipment, and time?

“It feels good,” said Donald Polson who will do all the painting work. “Anybody can write a check for a donation, but actually getting out there and doing the work is totally different. They do a lot for the community here. It’s just giving back.”

Saturday will be the big construction day. For more information, visit www.drymeout.com or e-mail Melissa Fahy at mfahy@goodsamclinic.org.

Mold Remediation and Property Restoration Begins on the Good Samaritan Health Clinic

Day 1: The property restoration has begun at The Good Samaritan Health Clinic of Pasco!

For those of you who may not know, The Good Samaritan Health Clinic of Pasco was chosen as winner of our Secret Restoration Project. The building exterior is in rough shape. Falling apart in places and completely infested by mold on several walls. Today, we have the awesome team from Don Polson Painting, including owner Don Polson himself, out with us to begin repairing the clinic’s exterior. We have quite a large team out because we have a lot of work to do in just 3 days. Our goal is to have the project completed by Saturday, February 19th.

In the meanwhile, FOX News stopped by today to get some footage of the restoration in action. You can see the segment tonight, Thursday, February 17th, at both the 5pm and 6pm hours.

We will keep you posted throughout the restoration!

Here are some photos that Don took at the site with his cell phone:

Palm Harbor Mold Growth in Attic

Recently, Advanced Restoration was called out to inspect a situation in a Palm Harbor attic: mold damage.

When we arrived on scene and climbed up into the attic of the home, we could clearly see several patches of mold growing. Once up in the attic, we inspected the area and came to two major conclusions. The first conclusion was that there was not nearly enough insulation in the attic. Insulation is extremely important in retaining the temperature in your home. For example, a well insulated attic will help retain warm temperatures in the winter and cool temperatures in the summer. The insulation in this home, however, was inadequate. It was old and probably a low grade. The recommended energy efficient insulation is scored at least at an index insulation value of R-30. R-30 would also mean between 8-14″ of insulation as opposed to the 2″ of insulation we were met with. So, not only was the lack of insulation working against the homeowner’s efforts to keep an ambient temperature in their home, and thus, increasing energy costs, but it was also allowing heat to enter the attic.

Our second conclusion as to what was creating an environment hospitable for black mold was the fact the the attic had very poor ventilation. With heat comes moisture and without adequate ventilation, the heat becomes trapped in the attic and the moisture sets onto the various materials in the attic. And as we all know, standing water can cause mold to grow rather quickly, especially if it is surrounded by mold’s favorite food: organic materials. It was clear what needed to be done. The first step: mold removal followed by complete remediation. The next step: the homeowner’s needed to get their attic updated with increased ventilation. Finally, the homeowner’s would need to get their insulation upgraded.

A quick note to homeowners is to check with your energy company to see if you can get a rebate. For example, Progress Energy offers homeowners incentives to upgrade their insulation. See this link for details: http://progress-energy.com/custservice/flares/energyhome/insulation.asp

Either way, the cost of upgrading your insulation and ensuring proper ventilation in your attic can benefit you in more ways than one. Not only will you be able to control your ambient temperature, but you will also be able to save on your energy bills and know that you have a healthy, happy attic.

Going Green for Mold Removal Tampa Bay: Meet the Boss XL3

At Advanced Restoration, we are always on the look out for cutting edge technology, especially when it’s green!

We are extremely excited to introduce our newest addition to the Advanced Restoration equipment lineup: a state of the art hydroxyl generating system, the BOSS XL3. Created by ODOROX, the BOSS XL3 is a hydroxyl generating system that is cutting edge, new, green technology and is the most advanced solution for eliminating odors, decontaminating surfaces and purifying the air. In simple terms, when it comes to damage restoration, there isn’t anything like the BOSS!
Hydroxyl Mold Removal New Port Richey Generator

To sum up the extraordinary benefits of Odorox hydroxyl generators, they provide a permanent solution to combat poor indoor air quality. Unlike other methods that use ozone or harsh chemicals, the Odorox system is completely safe for people, animals, plants, rubber, plastic, vinyl, electronics and other sensitive materials. The benefits of the Hyroxyl odor processors are enormous and can be used by any industry, even residential.

The EPA says the three main reasons for poor indoor air quality in office buildings are the presence of indoor air pollution sources; poorly designed, maintained, or operated ventilation systems; and uses of the building that were unanticipated or poorly planned for when the building was designed or renovated. Leaving these issues unaddressed can cause health problems for customers and employees, and ultimately lead to Sick Building Syndrome.

The technology behind the ODOROX generators is based on nature itself. ODOROX uses green technology to provide the most effective and efficient solution to eliminate odors, decontaminate surfaces and purify the air. How? Through the use of patented UV technology, ODOROX replicates the natural production of hydroxyls to completely eliminate biological and chemical contaminants. Hydroxyls, often referred to as nature’s detergent, play a critical role in cleaning the earth’s atmosphere. They are safe, naturally occurring molecules that are created in our atmosphere when the sun’s ultraviolet rays react with water vapor.

Now that we have explained the technology, let’s see how it works. The first part of the air cleanup happens within a processing chamber within the hydroxyl generators. In the chamber, airflow is sanitized and hydroxyls are produced. The hydroxyl molecules exit the chamber to decontaminate surfaces and contents. Contaminated air is directed into the chamber where it is met by an oxidizing formula to produce hydroxyls. Quartz crystal optics in the chamber are finely tuned to deodorize air flow, eradicate bacteria and other microorganisms, and produce hydroxyl molecules. The purified air is recycled back into the environment along with hydroxyls to further decontaminate surfaces & contents.

The second step of the purification happens when the hydroxyls that are created are sent to “seek and destroy” odor molecules, bacteria, viruses, mold, VOCs and other chemicals. Because of this, contaminants within a room are not required to pass through the processing chamber in order to become decontaminated. Outside the unit the hydroxyls immediately begin a cascade reaction in the air, creating even more hydroxyls. The cascade of hydroxyls quickly disperse throughout the air and penetrates surfaces and objects. Notably, the process simultaneously decontaminates the air, surfaces, and objects.

Odorox manufactures 7 types of hydroxyl odor processors. Each processor provides solutions based on the type of contaminant, severity of contamination and size of treatment area. The BOSS & BOSS XL3 models are manufactured to treat the widest variety of contaminants. While the BOSS is finely tuned to eliminate heavy odors, the Boss XL3 will provide a heavier concentration of hydroxyls to treat large areas affected by any odor problem that may be encountered. The Boss XL3 provides a heavy concentration of hydroxyls to treat large areas affected by fire and smoke, flood, nicotine, grey/ black water, decomposition, mold, sewage, chemical spills/ off gassing and any other odor problem you may encounter. In addition, the XL3 allows Advanced Restoration to decontaminate and deodorize while we dry because it joins directly to our existing air movers.

Due to the safety and effectiveness of the hydroxyl molecule, disaster restoration companies such as Advanced Restoration are benefiting tremendously from never before seen results. The XL3 can be used to remove odor from: fire and smoke; flood; nicotine; grey/ black water; decomposition; mold and mildew; chemicals; and sewage. In addition, the XL3 can be used to remove noxious gasses, VOC’s, mold spores, bacteria and viruses from the air. The BOSS line, including the XL3, can even be used to treat even the most common household odors such as odors from pets, cooking, skunks and trash.

In our industry, we use the BOSS XL3 for: Fire Restoration, Water Damage Restoration, Flood Damage, Sewage Backup, Mold Remediation Tampa, Odor Removal, Biohazard (odor abatement, bacteria & virus eradication), and for Deodorizing soft furniture, clothing & draperies. One of the most exciting aspects of using the BOSS XL3 (if all the reasons we listed weren’t enough), we can now decontaminate previously considered unsalvageable items. Plus, these units will not bleach or discolor items that are wet, nor will they damage rubber, plastic, leather, vinyl, electronics or other sensitive materials.

Whatever the contaminant, we are pleased to know that when it comes to disaster restoration, we can bring out our BOSS XL3 for even the worst problems. We appreciate that the BOSS XL3 equipment is completely safe for people, pets, plants, rubbers, plastics & other organic materials. Plus, Advanced Restoration is always excited to support green products from green companies.
